United Airlines MileagePlus has just launched its latest promotion for points purchased.
Buy United MileagePlus miles with a bonus
United MileagePlus will be offering a sale for miles purchased until 11:59 p.m. CT on Thursday, February 25, 2021. Different accounts can be eligible for different bonuses. So you should log into your account and see what you are aiming for. The accounts I manage appear a bonus of up to 100%. The 100% bonus is staggered as follows:
- Buy 5,000 to 14,000 miles and receive a 30% bonus
- Buy 15,000-39,000 miles and get a 60% bonus
- Buy more than 40,000 miles and get a 100% bonus
The 100% bonus gives you a total of 174,000 miles for $ 3,273.78 1.88 cents per MileagePlus mile. The reason the maximum amount is weird is because you cannot earn more than 175,000 MileagePlus miles per year including a bonus, and you can only earn miles in increments of 1,000.
It is interesting to note that United is re-imposing 7.5% excise tax on miles purchased, which it did not for much of 2020. For this reason, the cost of buying miles with a 100% bonus is now higher than in 2020.
Other accounts may see different bonuses so you want to see what you are entitled to.
United offers bonuses for miles purchased with a certain frequency. When these promotions take place, the bonuses are usually between 50% and 100%. A 100% bonus corresponds to the best offers we see from the program.
With this promotion, it can take up to 48 hours for purchased miles to be posted to your account.
Should you buy United MileagePlus miles?
Personally, I estimate MileagePlus miles at ~ 1.4 cents each, though there are ways to get more value out of them.
Note that MileagePlus has made many negative changes recently:
However, with a specific use in mind, it may make sense to purchase miles, either for United redemptions or for partner redemptions.
Which credit card should you use to buy United Miles?
United Mileage purchases are processed by points.com, which means that they are not considered a flight purchase for credit card issuance purposes.
So I would recommend using a card that you try to meet the minimum spend or otherwise a credit card that maximizes your return on daily expenses, such as a credit card Chase Freedom Unlimited® (Review), Citi® Double Cash Card (Review) or The Blue Business® Plus credit card from American Express (Review)
In this post, you will learn more about which credit cards are best for purchasing points.
Other ways to earn MileagePlus miles
If you want to earn United miles, MileagePlus is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, so you can convert Ultimate Rewards points into United miles at a 1: 1 ratio.

United MileagePlus offers up to 100% bonus on miles purchased. This is one way to earn MileagePlus miles for 1.88 cents each – while there are circumstances where it could be good business, there is no way I would speculatively earn miles at that price. Even so, the price is as good as MileagePlus miles purchased.
