The US American Express Membership Rewards program just launched a transfer bonus that is a repeat of the bonus we saw a few months ago. This is in addition to the program that Marriott Bonvoy offers a 40% transfer bonus on the same dates. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be too happy about any of these offers.
Transfer Amex Points with 40% Bonus to Hilton Honors
Through June 15, 2021, the US Amex Membership Rewards program offers a 40% bonus when you transfer points to Hilton Honors.
Points are usually transferred at a ratio of 1: 2, which means that during this promotion, points are transferred at a ratio of 1: 2.8. In other words, you will earn 2,800 Honors Points for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points transferred.
You can expect points to be transferred immediately. In this post you will find the best credit cards for collecting Amex points.
As mentioned above, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a transfer bonus like this:
- At the end of 2020 we saw an identical bonus
- In mid-2020 we saw an identical bonus
- In early 2020 we saw an even better bonus of up to 50%
After Hilton has pre-sold $ 1 billion worth of Honors Points to American Express, Membership Rewards Points have some excess points to play around with.
Should you transfer Amex points to Hilton?
Personally, I value Amex points at ~ 1.7 cents each, while I rate Hilton Honors points at ~ 0.5 cents each. Based on my scoring and the 1: 2.8 transfer ratio, you get about 1.4 cents worth per Amex point. While this is not surprising, it is pretty good, and for many it might prove worthwhile.
It is worth noting that I want my rating of points to be conservative, and there are always ways to get hugely oversized value through proper use of points.
Hilton often sells points for .5 cents each, and I’ve written about some of the best ways to redeem Hilton Honors points. Otherwise, if you don’t have easy ways to earn Hilton Points, I think there are many circumstances in which it could make very good sense to transfer Amex Points to Hilton for a specific use:
- The Waldorf Astoria Maldives and Los Cabos can be booked for 125,000 Hilton points per night, which equates to ~ 45,000 Amex points per night
- The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and Amsterdam can be booked for 95,000 Hilton points per night, which equates to ~ 34,000 Amex points per night
These are just a few examples. I don’t think this will always be worth doing, but with a specific use in mind and after cracking the numbers, I think this action has the potential to be worth it.
Earn points with Hilton Amex Cards
There are so many great uses for Amex Points. So if I could personally I would try other ways to earn Hilton Honors Points. Not only is it worth buying points directly, but knowing the co-branded Hilton Amex credit cards that are currently offering some increased bonuses:
These are some great ways to earn Hilton points.
For the next few months, Amex is offering a 40% bonus when you transfer points to Hilton Honors, which means the transfer ratio is 1: 2.8.
This has the potential to be good deal for a specific use, although personally I would prefer to purchase Hilton Points another way and save my Amex Points for something else.
