What’s the latest in Lufthansa’s new Business Class, which was announced in 2019?
The new Lufthansa Business Class is set to debut on 777-9
In November 2017 (yes, over three years ago) Lufthansa introduced a brand new business class product. This appeared to be a massive improvement over Lufthansa’s current Business Class, as the new cabin offers direct aisle access from every seat and significantly more privacy.
Lufthansa’s new business class
There was only one small problem … The new Business Class was due to debut on the Boeing 777-9, which was due to be delivered at the time Lufthansa was due to start deliveries in 2020. In other words, the product was still years away from reality.
Unfortunately, the Boeing 777-9 has been delayed by a few years in the meantime, and the first aircraft is not expected to be delivered until the end of 2023 at the earliest. In other words, it would be at least six years before Lufthansa announced its new Business Class seat before the first passenger actually saw it.

And of course I can’t mention that without pointing out that Skytrax declared Lufthansa a 5-star airline in 2017, just a few weeks after announcing its new Business Class. Skytrax said a “key factor” for the award was the announcement of a new business class by Lufthansa. And we wonder why Skytrax has no credibility …
When will Lufthansa’s new Business Class be introduced?
Always knowledgeable @xJonNYC shares an interesting introduction to the service update for the Boeing 777-9 from Lufthansa and for the new Business Class from Lufthansa:
“Lufthansa belongs to the group of start-up customers for the Boeing 777-9. The delivery of the first 777-9 to Lufthansa is planned for the end of 2023. It was previously planned for the first half of 2022.
It was planned to roll out the B777-9 and the new Lufthansa Business Class together, but all schedules are currently being reassessed. “
As you can see, the latest update doesn’t tell us much. There are a few ways you can read this:
- There is talk of Lufthansa looking for smaller long-haul jets, so there are still questions about whether Lufthansa can swap 777-9s for smaller planes like 787-9s
- Lufthansa currently has orders for the A350-900 and 787-9. So could these planes possibly arrive before 777-9 and have new business class seats? Lufthansa could start delivering A350-900 again soon, and 787-9 deliveries should begin in late 2022, although who knows what that timeline looks like after the coronavirus …
- Could Lufthansa rethink the new business class product at this point for financial reasons? It’s unlikely how out of date Lufthansa’s product is, but you never know …
At this point in time we don’t know much except that Lufthansa is re-evaluating these seats. It has never been confirmed that A350 or 787 would get these new seats so one has to wonder if these planes could get the new seats first or what.
One thing is certain – this must be the biggest delay between the announcement of a new Business Class seat and its actual launch.
Lufthansa has also ordered the Boeing 787-9
Lufthansa plans to receive the first Boeing 777-9 at the end of 2023. While the 777-9 is an exciting aircraft as such, Lufthansa’s new business class product is the most exciting aspect from a passenger experience perspective.
At this point, we’re looking at six years between the announcement of Lufthansa’s new Business Class product and its possible launch. I’m curious what Lufthansa will ultimately decide here – could the A350 or 787 be delivered with the new Business Class before the end of 2023, or …?
