American AAdvantage is always offering specials on miles purchased, and the program has just launched its latest promotion.
American AAdvantage promotion for miles purchased
American AAdvantage is offering the following tiered discount on miles purchased through Monday, March 15, 2021:
- Buy 15,000-49,000 miles and get a 15% discount
- Buy 50,000-99,000 miles and get a 25% discount
- Buy 100,000-149,000 miles and get a 35% discount
- Buy 150,000 miles and get a 45% discount
The maximum amount of this promotion will allow you to purchase 150,000 AAdvantage miles for $ 3,104.07. This corresponds to a rate of 2.07 cents per AAdvantage mile.
As usual, AAdvantage accounts that are less than 30 days old cannot buy miles.
As for American bonuses and discounts on miles purchased, the program typically charges ~ 1.7 to 2.3 cents per mile during a promotion. So this isn’t the worst price we’ve seen for miles purchased, but it’s also a far cry from the best price we’ve seen.
Is Buying AAdvantage American Miles Good Business?
Personally, I value American AAdvantage miles at 1.5 cents each. While American downgraded its awards table a few years ago, there are still some excellent uses for AAdvantage miles, especially when traveling in business class with partner airlines.
As a reminder, here are the cost of First and Business Class awards originating in the United States under the current program:
|Related 48 US To:||Business class||First class|
|Adjacent 48 US states||25,000||50,000|
|Canada & Alaska||30,000||55,000|
|South America Zone 1||30,000||55,000|
|South America Zone 2||57,500||85,000|
|Middle East / India||70,000||115,000|
|Asia Zone 1||60,000||80,000|
|Asia Zone 2||70,000||110,000|
American miles will continue to be used extensively in Qatar Airways Business Class
I still find the cost of returns in business class reasonable in most cases. There are cases in which it can be useful to collect miles for short-term use during a promotion.
For example, I redeemed 75,000 AAdvantage miles for a Qatar Airways one-way business class ticket from Cape Town to the US, which I think is a spectacular value.
Which credit card should you use to buy miles?
American processes mileage purchases directly, which means that the purchase of miles qualifies as an airfare. Hence, you should consider using one of the following cards on your purchase as you will receive the following airfare bonuses:
Redeem American miles for JAL Business Class
For example, I estimate Membership Rewards points to be 1.7 cents each, so I see this as an 8.5% return on those expenses if you use them The American Express Platinum Card® (Review).
Other great ways to earn American Miles
There are many great ways to earn American Miles other than direct purchases. There are currently excellent welcome bonuses for American Airlines AAdvantage cards that are co-branded as follows:
You can also earn AAdvantage miles with a Bask savings account.
American AAdvantage has just launched its latest promotion for miles purchased. Unfortunately, the cost per mile purchased isn’t particularly attractive here, and I wouldn’t recommend buying miles unless you have an eye on how to use them right away.
