The annual fee of $ 95 Citi Premier® map (Rating) is the most rewarding mid-range credit card in my opinion. While many people might be familiar with that Chase Sapphire Preferred® card (Review), the Citi Premier is an overlooked competitor (or an addition, whichever way you look at it).
In this post, I wanted to share six reasons why you should get the Citi Premier if you don’t already have it. In no particular order:
60K bonus thank you points
The Citi Premier Card has a sign-up bonus of 60,000 Thank You Points after spending $ 4,000 in three months. Personally, I value ThankYou points at 1.7 cents each, so this bonus is worth a massive $ 1,020 to me. Since a lot of people don’t have this card, these are some simple reward points that you can collect.
Here are the general restrictions on applying for Citi cards, as well as Citi’s 24 month rule.

The best 3x point bonus categories
Among credit cards with annual fees below $ 100, the Citi Premier almost indisputably offers the best bonus categories. The Citi Premier offers 3x Thank You Points in the following categories:
Particularly noteworthy is the opportunity to earn 3x points for food, gasoline and groceries, which for some people covers a large part of daily expenses.
Collect 3x thank you points for hotel expenses
Annual hotel credit of $ 100
Once a calendar year, the Citi Premier offers $ 100 off a single hotel stay of $ 500 or more, excluding taxes and fees. This applies when booking via the Citi ThankYou portal. While booking this way can incur an opportunity cost, many people will find it valuable, and in these cases it alone can more than justify the annual fee.

Great Citi ThankYou transfer partners
The Citi Premier is ideal if you want to collect points that can be transferred to airline partners. Even when you are not currently traveling, these points hold their value quite well and can bring you some amazing premium travel experiences in the future.
For example, Citi ThankYou points can be transferred to Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, Emirates Skywards, KrisFlyer in Singapore, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and many more. The ways to redeem these points for premium travel are endless.
Best of all, if you have Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards points, there is some overlap between airline partners so in many cases you can transfer points from both programs to the same partner.

Maximize the Citi Double Cash Card
This is arguably the most compelling reason to get the Citi Premier. The no annual fee Citi® Double Cash Card (Review) is the best single card for everyday spending with no bonus. The card offers 1% cashback when you make a purchase and 1% cashback when you pay for that purchase.
While this is usually a cashback card, one cent per point rewards can be converted into thank you points if you have the Citi Double Cash in conjunction with the Citi Premier. This means that with the Citi Double Cash you can earn 2x ThankYou points per dollar.
When you have Citi Premier and Citi Double Cash, you pay a one-time annual fee of $ 95 and earn:
- 3x points on flight
- 3x points for eating
- 3x points on gas
- 3x points on food
- 3x points on hotels
- 2x points on all other purchases
The Citi Double Cash is a great addition to the Citi Premier
Get even more value with the Citi Rewards + Card
The no annual fee Citi Rewards +® map (Review) is another incredible addition to the Citi Premier. This card offers many advantages. The best benefit, however, is that you get 10% of your points back for the first 100,000 ThankYou points you redeem each calendar year.
This includes Citi ThankYou points accumulated on other cards, which means that the 2-3x points you can earn with all of your spending can potentially get you even further, more in the 2.2-3 range , 3x points for all your purchases (again with restrictions and up to certain limits).
Get 10% of your points back when you redeem Citi ThankYou points
The Citi Premier Card is an excellent credit card that is all too often overlooked by people. The card has a huge welcome bonus, offers some of the best 3x point categories of any card, and perhaps most excitingly, this card really allows you to maximize the annual fee Citi Double Cash Card, the best card for everyday expenses. The Citi Premier and Citi Double Cash are one of the best card duos ever.
If you don’t already have the Citi Premier Card, I highly recommend that you apply for it. The sign up bonus has a huge upside, and then most people will likely see the long-term value on the card.
